“Preserve heat, respect
the
environment"
In comparison with all
other
floorcover-
ings, thermal comfort is improved signifi-
cantly through textile floorcoverings. Carpets not only offer warmth by
looking
good, they also make a measurable contribution to heat retention. With
their
low heat conduction, they act as
ther-
mal insulators. When
a
foot has direct contact with the floor, it is subject to heat
dissipation.
Also, the net heat radiation from the body to the carpet, compared with
other
floors, is smaller because there are only small storable masses at the
surface
of the textile floorcoverings. This is because the dense pile of the
carpet
and the backing have an insulating effect, thereby creat-
ing a heat barrier.
An additional benefit of the
insulating effect of carpet
is that body warmth is primarily governed by foot warmth.

Carpets do not extract heat from the soles
of the feet, they remain warm
on a carpeted floor. The fibres help
to
create
air
pockets, which act as small heat
cushions. This foot warmth means that rooms fitted with textile
floorcoverings
are also comfortable at lower tempera-
tures. It has been proven that subjects feel just as comfortable in a
carpeted
room with a roomtemperature that is
1-2 °C lower. The footwarming
attribute of carpeting can be felt at its best in association with floor
heating; especially as the seasons change.
