Scientific research
confirms that noise pollution in buildings has a critical effect on the sense
of well-being. Fitting a carpet plays an important role in noise insulation.
Besides eliminating impact noise, textile floorcoverings possess good
sound - absorption properties. This is especially noticeable at sites where
a large number of people gather: a school, an open-plan office, a reception hall, or
the teenage party upstairs!
With a fitted carpet, rooms become cosier
as noise-disturbance is reduced substantially. This applies to both the
room where the noise is produced and the surrounding
area. With a sound absorption degree averaging around 25%, a carpet has a
particularly effective sound - absorbing effect com-
pared with any other floorcovering.

Carpet virtually eliminates impact noise;
its soft cushioning action almost immediately absorbs sound. The simple
rule: the thicker the carpet, the greater the sound absorption. The conduction
of impact noise is reduced by 25 to 30 dB (decibels). Comparative values for
hard floorcoverings lie between 5 and 15 dB.
Carpets ensure that the “life” of noise
is only half as long as with hard floorings. Specifying carpet from the beginning
of the planning stage enables savings to be made through acoustic measures.
In the home environment the sound absorption
attribute of carpet is an aid to relaxation too. Hi-Fi enthusiasts in particular
appreciate the sound absorbing effect of carpets. Textile floorcovering provides
a contrasting surface to large hard surfaces such as window areas, thus helping
to produce a balanced sound.
In rooms with sufficient soundproofing,
people tend to be calmer, noise levels are minimised and are perceived
for shorter periods of ime due to shorter impact times.
